Mattie was the daughter of Thor/Tore Thompson and Gertrude Jane Olson. Her father was born in 1842 in Norway and died 13 May 1872 in Garfield, Jackson County, Wisconsin. Her mother remarried, to Louis Nelson (1839-1909).

Mattie' siblings were:
