GREENWOOD - Payne Henderson Barnette, 82, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Greenwood Packing Plant, resident of 109 South Cedar Lake, died Wednesday, September 13, 2006, at his home.
Born in Greenwood, January 26, 1924, he was a son of the late Dr. W.A. and Mary Payne Henderson Barnette.
He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and attended Clemson from 1941 to 1943, when his education was interrupted by World War II. After serving in the US Air Force in the South Pacific, he resumed his education in 1945 at the University of South Carolina where he graduated in 1948 with a degree in business administration. After serving as a Legislative Liaison while at Carolina for then-Governor Strom Thurmond, he continued to work on the governor's staff for about four months, at which time his father's illness required that he return to the family business in Greenwood. Today, Greenwood Packing Plant provides " Carolina Pride" meat products to buyers in states along the eastern seaboard. Carolina Pride products are also exported to Puerto Rico, South America, England, Poland, France and Mexico. Mr. Barnette formerly served as chairman of the State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education, was a member of the SC Coordinating Council for Economic Development and was a life member of the University of South Carolina Educational Foundation. He served on the Board of Directors of the Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of SC in Charleston and was Trustee of the College of Business Administration, University of South Carolina and in 1991 was recipient of the College of Business Administration Distinguished Alumni Award. In 1990, he was recipient of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce Business Man of the Year and in 1991, he was inducted into the Greenwood County Hall of Fame. In 1995, he was inducted into the South Carolina Business Hall of Fame. He formerly served as Director of the SC Chamber of Commerce and served on the Board of Visitors at Lander University. A member of the First Presbyterian Church, he was also a Rotarian and a member of the SC Chamber of Commerce, The Palmetto Business Forum, the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce, the University of South Carolina Chair Club, the Faculty House of Carolina and the Summit Club.
His wife, Martha Wharton Barnette, died October 12, 1992. Surviving are a son, P. Henderson "Hank" ,Jr. And wife Martha Barnette of Greenwood; Two daughters, Martha Barnette Blatt and husband Brian and Edith Barnette McNeish and husband Jim, all of Columbia. A brother, William A. "Bill" Barnette, Jr. of Greenwood; Three grandchildren, Lee Blatt, Isabelle McNeish and Victoria McNeish, all of Columbia.
Mr. Barnette was predeceased by a brother, J. Edwin Barnette.
Funeral services will be conducted at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. David Mayo officiating.
Private family burial will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park.
