J Edwin Barnette, 54, of 511 New Market St, husband of Mrs Barbara Hulsey Barnette, died Sunday.

Born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late William A and Mary Henderson Barnette Sr. He was vice-president of Greenwood Packing Plant, a Navy veteran of World War II, a graduate of Citadel, past-chairman of Star Fort Historical Commission, past-president of Greenwood Historical Society, director of the Bank of Hodges, a member of Greenwood Rotary Club and a member and former elder of First Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife of the home; two daughters, Mrs Donald (Mary) Underwood of Greenwood and Mrs Dennis (Barbara) Bardin of Charleston; two brothers, P Henderson and William A Barnette Jr of Greenwood; two grandsons.

Services were at 4 pm today at the home, 511 New Market St with Dr Warren B Gaw officiating. Burial was in Barnette Farm Cemetery.

Pallbearers were W A III, P H Jr and Evans T Barnette, Frank Workman, Stanley Baker III, Gregg Henderson, Ebie Grier, William Dean and Ernest Weeks.

Honorary escort was Ed Workman, John Eck, Dr Stanley Baker, Frank Wideman, Calhoun Mays, Harold Lumley, Richard Wallace, Wellsman Johnson, Bill Wilkerson, Henry Connors, William Nettles and Hootie Johnson.

The family asks that flowers be omitted and memorials made to First Presbyterian Church.

Blyth Funeral Home was in charge.
