Mrs. Bess Book Black, 73, of Kettering, a former Portsmouth resident, died at 3:12 a.m. today at Portsmouth General Hospital.
Born Sept. 29, 1888, at Fallen Timber, she was a daughter of Harrison and Mary Jane Gilliland Price.
Surviving are her husband, Walter Black; three daughters, Mrs. Mildred Askin, 845 Eunice St., Sciotoville; Mrs. Marie Gammon, 5526 Auburn Ave., Sciotoville, and Mrs. Jean Staley of Dayton; two sons, Andrew of Buena Vista and Jack of Dayton; a brother, Fred Price of Florida; two sisters, Mrs. Marie Meenach of Friendship and Mrs. Jean Johnson of Portsmouth; 27 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Andrew Book, two sons and a daughter.
She was a member of the Belmont Church of Christ at Dayton.
Funeral services are to be at 2 p.m. at Windel-Howland Funeral Home, with Ed Bachman, minister, officiating. Burial is to be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 tonight.
