At the time of his passing, Mr. Black was survived by his daughter, Anona Black Johnston; son, Harold Raymond Black; brother, Lawrence Vernon Black; and by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.


Mr. Black was preceded in death by his first wife, Mae Ella Hall Black; by his second wife, Bess Book Black; son, Francis Andrew "Frank" Black; sisters, Mary L. Black Meade, Helen B. Black, and Roah Anna Black Jones; and by his parents, Francis William and Mildred Ann Canifax Black.

William Walter Black, 79, of 3117 Richard Rd., died Tuesday night at home.


A Portsmouth native and a retired carpenter, he was a member of Friendship Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mae Hall Black, and his second wife, Bess Book Black.


Survivors include a son, Hal Black, of Santa Monica, California; a daughter, Mrs. Anona Johnston of Burbank, California; a brother, Lawrence Black of Venice, Florida; two stepsons; Andrew Book of Stout, and Jack Book of Dayton; three step-daughters; Mrs. Jean Staley of Dayton, Mrs. Mildred Askins of 845 Eunice Dr., Sciotoville, Mrs. Marie Gammon, 5526 Auburn Ave, Sciotoville; four grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.


Services are to be at 2 p.m. Friday at Windell Holand Funeral Home with Rev. Andrew Book officiating and interment in Floral Hills Memory Garden.
