Mildred Jane Erickson Smith died of cancer peacefully at home surrounded by family on July 9th, 2008 at the age of 88. Mildred was born on the 26th of February, 1920 in Ogden, Utah, the daughter of Arthur Erickson and Ruby Rose. She graduated from Kemmerer, Wyoming in 1938 as the first female valedictorian of her high school. She received an associate degree in English from the University of Wyoming before taking vacation in Hawaii where she met and married Don LaVelle Smith January 25, 1942 in Honolulu. Don and Mildred had three children in Hawaii and three more were born in Florida while Don was in the navy and three more were born while they lived in Utah. Mildred passed her love of music and reading on to her children. She and her family enriched many with their music in the wards and neighborhoods they have all lived in. She has been active in the LDS Church, serving as Primary President, Relief Society President and a myriad other callings. She has always served others in family and her ward and neighborhood. Besides the many people who love and appreciate her for the services she has rendered, she leaves behind 56 grandchildren and 75 great-grandchildren, with at least nine more coming later this year. She is survived by one brother, Harold Erickson, and seven of her children, Janelle (Ron) Van Orman, Lani (Ron) Nelson, Sheila (Phillip) Miller, Brian (Marsha), Luana Green, Kerry (Sharon), Erin (Bruce) Nelson. She is predeceased by five brothers and sisters and her husband as well as two children, Traci (Bob) McLeod, and Damon. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, July 12 at 11:00 a.m. at the chapel on 1050 E. Galena Dr. There will be a viewing at Broomhead Funeral Home 12600 South 2200 West, Riverton from 6-8 p.m. on Friday July 11th and a viewing at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the chapel.
