Alexander was the son of Jonathan B. Kerns and Cynthia Lee. He married Telitha Ellen Pearce, daughter of John and Mary Ann Pearce, on 23 Jul 1874 in Bellevue, Sarpy, Nebraska. Together they had the following known children:
