Alex R. Deshane, 84, formerly of Norwood

NORWOOD -- Funeral service for Alex R. Deshane, 84, formerly of Norwood, will be held in the spring at the convenience of his family. Mr. Deshane passed away Thursday night (February 21, 2019) at United Helpers Maplewood in Canton with his loving family by his side.

Surviving is his wife of almost 60 years, Mary, sons Alex (Angela) Deshane Jr. of Massena and James (Cheryl) Deshane of Norwood, daughters Elizabeth (John) Guiney of Knapp Station and Jennifer (Michael) Jones of Norwood, a brother Cecil Deshane of Massena and a sister Georgina Moody of Norfolk, grandchildren Bridget Pike, Todd Deshane, Kristin Page, Emily Page, Matt Deshane, Travis Smultz, Jordan Drummatter, Evan White, Amber Jones, Jon Jones, 3 step-grandchildren and 4 step-great grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his brothers Gerald and Peter, Deshane, a sister Viva Kelly, two half-brothers, 5 half-sisters, and an infant son Thomas Howard Deshane.

Alex was born June 1, 1934 in Norfolk, NY to the late Robert and Martha (Jandreau) Deshane. He attended Norfolk country school, and married Mary June Wolfe on March 14, 1959 at the Church of Visitation in Norfolk, NY. Alex worked for various farms in the area growing up, in the custodial department at St. Lawrence University, St. Lawrence County, and in the pot rooms at Reynolds Aluminum for 27 years before his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW and formerly the Railroad Club.

Alex was described as a jack of all trades, he enjoyed music, especially playing the guitar, which inspired his children to be musicians. He loved collecting model trains, hunting just for fun, fishing on small creeks, brooks, and the Raquette River, and especially spending time with his family.
