John Donegan of Seguin, Texas | 1924 - 2019 | Obituary
April 29, 1924 - February 18, 2019

John Donegan, age 94 of Seguin, passed away on February 18, 2019.
A memorial service celebrating John’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at First United Methodist Church. A reception will follow at Hierholzer Hall.
John was born on April 29, 1924 in Seguin, Texas to Hettie Willie Giffen and Charles Henry Donegan.
He attended public schools in Seguin and graduated from Seguin High School in 1941. He received an associate degree from Texas Lutheran College where he was on the school’s swim team and sang in the school’s choir with the love of his life and future bride, Idalen June Hey.
John and Idalen were married on April 6, 1945. He served in the Navy during World War II.
After the war he returned to school and graduated from Southwestern University in Georgetown and earned a master’s degree from Southwestern Graduate School of Banking. He also assisted in teaching students at Harvard Business School in Boston, Massachusetts.
Following in his father’s footsteps, John became President of First National Bank of Seguin at the age of 29 and served in that capacity for his entire banking career. After retirement he worked at CMC for several years. He was an avid bicyclist and attributed his longevity to that hobby. He also enjoyed cheering on the Spurs, watching classic movies, baking bread and spending time with his family.
John was an integral part of civic, religious and cultural activities in Seguin for more than 70 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Seguin, the Rotary Club of Seguin, TLC Board of Regents, Library Board, Salvation Army, Chamber of Commerce, Appraisal Board, Mid-Texas Symphony, Matador Band Boosters and Seguin Conservation Society. He held offices in most of these organizations. All of his life and activities were dedicated to the highest ideals and standards for his family, his church and his community.
John was preceded in death by his wife of more than 51 years, Idalen; his parents; sister and brothers Marjorie Donegan Luce, Charles Henry Donegan, Jr., Benton Donegan; sisters-in-law Marjorie Lee Weyel Donegan, Doris Hey Zuehl; brothers in-law A.E. “Buck” Luce, Raleigh Custer, Richard Zuehl; and son-in-law Gary Morgan.
