TOLEDO - John H. 'Jack' Fritts, 81, of Toledo died Tuesday (Oct. 19, 2004) in Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Mattoon, after a long battle with cancer.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Barkley Funeral Chapel, Toledo, with visitation 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Bell Cemetery, Greenup, with military rites. Memorials: Life Center, Toledo, or Greenup VFW.

Mr. Fritts was born Jan. 6, 1923, in Cumberland County, the son of Henry M. and Malinda Carrie Beals Fritts. He served his country in the Navy in World War II in the Pacific. He was on three ships that were blown up and whose crews had to be rescued. He was a farmer and in recent years enjoyed vegetable gardening and taking care of his cattle. He stayed active even after his retirement and worked at Cochonour?s Horse Farm in Casey until he was 80. He married Eva L. Black in July 1946.

Surviving are his wife; sons, Tom L. Fritts and wife Sheila of Toledo; Dennis D. Fritts and wife Bev of Sullivan, Ind.; daughters, Vicki Combs and husband Jerry of Due West, S.C.; Gail Russell of Toledo; daughter-in-law, Lydia Fritts of Trilla; brother, Ira 'Bud' Fritts and wife Phyllis of Windsor; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and son, Terry G. Fritts.
