Vit is the son of Joseph Nechanicky and Helen (Podhajsky ) Nechanicky and was 1 of 15 children. His father was from Bohemia and after moving to the USA meet and married Helen who was from rural Clutier, Iowa. Vit graduated from Odessa High School in 1929. As a teenager he was afflicted with asthma, therefore could not live in the Odessa area. he was an excellent mechanic and applied his skills to farm machinery, auto bodies and fenders, logging machinery, aircraft, and, in fact could do a top job with any mechanical item. He also became a skilled logger and miner.
On March 12, 1942, he was drafted into the Army Air Force at Fort Lewis, Washington, for World War II. He served with the 31st Airdepot Group at Hillfield, Utah, and wahis interestss shipped to England Nov. 5, 1943, where he served with the 39th Depot Red Sq., 35th ADG. Vit served as an aircraft engineering technician with the rank of Staff Sgt. He departed England June 29, 1945: returned to Fort Lewis; and was discharged Sept. 16, 1945, after serving in the 8th Air Force for 3 years, 6 months and 5 days.
After the war, Vit went into the auto body and fender repair business; then joined his brother John, in forming a partnership to purchase and operate a merchandise vending business in Seattle, Washington. When John wanted to retire, Vit bought his interests and then some years later sold them and retired in Seattle. His hobbies were big game hunting and fishing. He married Dorothy Ollie (Black) Mohr on December 31, 1949 in Seattle, WA
