John R. Gardner, age 76, passed away January 7, 1995 in Salt Lake City following a struggle with cancer.

Born May 31, 1918 in West Jordan, Utah to Vernal and Harriet Riggs Gardner. Married Claudine "Billie" Winkelman in Mt.

Pleasant, Utah on December 26, 1947. She preceded him in death July 23, 1988 after 40 years of a fun and rewarding marriage. Graduated from the University of Utah with a BS degree in mechanical engineering.

He was a veteran of World Ward II, European Theater, serving with the 1476th Engineer Maintenance Company. He worked six years for Caterpillar Tractor Company, before and after the war, as an engineer in the Research Department in Peoria, Illinois. In 1951 he came back to Salt Lake City as an engineer for the Utah Lime and Stone Company, later Genstar, to help run and manage several limestone product plants, and later transferring to California, becoming manufacturing manager for two cement plants. He retired after 32 years of service and returned to Salt Lake City with his wife in 1983.

He was an accomplished woodworker completing projects ranging from a boat and many pieces of furniture to several all-wood clocks, and two fine violins. He enjoyed many outdoor activities with family and friends, including camping, hunting, fishing, boating, snow and water skiing. He particularly enjoyed annual horse packing trips into the Unita Mountains, rarely missing one over a 50-year span. He belonged to the Utah Antique Machinery Association of West Jordan for several years during which time he has displayed and pulled his Cat 10 and several D2 tractors.

Survivors include daughter, Jan Gardner, Tucson, Arizona; son, John Gardner, Martinez, California; four grandchildren, Chris, Thomas, Anna and Michael; sisters, Allah Devey, West Jordan, Utah; Shirley Fletcher, Hattiesburg, Mississippi; brother, Edwin F. Gardner, West Jordan, Utah.
