George S. Challacombe, 83, Topeka, died late Sunday, Dec. 26, 1993, at a Topeka hospital. Mr. Challacombe was a draftsman 33 years for Santa Fe Railway before he retired in 1975. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was born Nov. 5, 1910, in Scranton, the son of William and Mary Hartsorn Challacombe. He grew up in Harveyville, attended Harveyville High School one year, then was graduated in 1928 from Topeka High School. He attended the University of Kansas at Lawrence with a major in drafting. Mr. Challacombe was member of Lowman United Methodist Church, Topeka Lodge No. 17, AF&AM, and Topeka Scottish Rite. He was married to Harriet Krueger in 1947 in St. Louis, Mo. She died in 1958. Survivors include two sons, Richard T. Challacombe, Topeka and William G. Challacombe, Belton, Mo.; two sisters, Edith Foster, Eagle, Wis., and Flossie Baldwin, Reynoldsburg, Ohio; and five grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Scranton Cemetery. Mr. Challacombe will lie in state after 2 p.m. today at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, 3210 E. Douglas, Wichita, 67208.
