OBIT: PERISHED IN POND-SEVEN YEAR OLD SON OF WM. CHALLACOMBE DROWNED ON HIS FATHER’S FARM: MacBarlow, the seven year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Challacombe, who reside on their farm about seven miles east and two south of town, was drowned shortly before noon last Friday while fishing, with his twin brothers two years younger, in a pond in the field. The pond was quite deep, considerably above a man’s head. As near as the facts can be learned the child had lost his fishing pole and in trying to recover it lost his balance and fell into the water and being unable to swim soon sank to the bottom. The screams of the other children attracted their father, who was plowing a short distance away, but he was unable to locate the body and it was not until a neighbor was called that the remains were recovered and it was them too late to resuscitate the child. The children had been warned not to go to the pond, but were permitted to fish in a shallow pool near the road. Apparently they disobeyed and went to the larger, deeper pond with the results as stated. The drowned child was a nephew of Mrs. Dr. Seabrook and Mr. Challacombe the milkman of this city. The funeral occurred Sunday, the remains being interred at Scranton. 22 Jun 1916 Osage County Chronicle, Burlingame
