Phillip Essex was the second of nine known children of John Essig (became Essex) (1771-1871) and Catherine Rothrock (1775-1849), who married 01 Jan 1796 at Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina. The family moved from Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina to the vicinity of Hope, Bartholomew County, Indiana in March 1833. Eight of the nine children moved to Indiana with the family, the ninth staying behind in North Carolina with her husband and family.

Phillip married Anna Maria Huff (1805-1879) on 23 Dec 1824 at Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina. There was reported to be eleven children in the family, and thanks to the work of cousin Johnna Cook Johnson, who identified four of the children that died young and are buried at Hope, we now have the complete listing:

1. Emmanuel Howard Essex (1825-1844)
2. Charity Catharina Essex Carter (1826-1903)
3. Levi L. Essex (1828-1834)
4. Lucinda M. Essex (1830-1833)
5. Philip S. Essex (1833-1834)
6. Beata Essex (1836-1836)
7. Amos Joseph Essex (1837-1904)
8. Simon Wells Essex (1839-1905)
9. Lydia Rebecca Essex (1841-1844)
10. Joel Robert Essex (1843-1868)
11. Anna Matilda Essex Remy (1846-1929)

I can't find the family on the 1850 census. In 1860 the parents and Amos, Simon, Joel and Anna were living at Flat Rock Township, Bartholomew County, Indiana.

Links to Phillip's parents, wife, all of his eleven known children and all of his eight known siblings are included below.
