Robert P. “R.P.” Carraher, son of Thomas and Edna (Ford) Carraher, was born January 7, 1925 in Spalding, NE. He received his elementary and high school education at Spalding Academy in Spalding and graduated in May of 1942.

He joined the U.S. Navy in June 1944 and went to Farragut, Idaho for his boot camp training. He was then assigned to the Amphibious Transport ship, the USS Goshen 108 at San Diego. He spent 18 months at sea in the Pacific. Highlights of his Navy career were picking up survivors of two U.S. destroyers that were hit by Japanese suicide planes and bringing home the troops from Iwo Jima. He was discharged from the Navy in June of 1946.

He later farmed and ranched with his father and brother, Paul. He started his own cattle business, buying and selling cattle, keeping them around even in later years, as that was one of his passions. He enjoyed playing basketball in high school and later playing horse shoes, going on cattle drives and spending time with friends. He was instrumental in starting the turtle races in Ericson in 1967 with a sandhill turtle he found in the pasture. The tradition of turtle races in Ericson continues to this day. After he went to the nursing home, he enjoyed singing Irish tunes to the staff and visitors, bringing smiles to everyone.

He married Patricia J. Glesinger on December 29, 1949 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spalding. They raised three children: Jean, Dan, and Tom.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, the Men’s Club, the Knights of Columbus and a 70 year member of the American Legion Post #299. He also blew taps at many military funerals and the Memorial Day program for many years.

R.P. is survived by his daughter: Jean (Dick) Herrera of Spalding, NE; sons: Dan (Stephanie Jo) Carraher of Kimberly, ID; Tom Carraher of Hastings, NE; four grandchildren: Jon (Vicki) Herrera; Corry (Jessica) Herrera; Eve (Phil) Rosno; Lisa (Scott) Bales; 12 great-grandchildren; sister: Margaret Briggs; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia Jean on May 21, 2016; his parents; brothers: Albert, Mike, Jim, Paul, Denny and Linus (at birth); Sisters: Ernestine, Mary, Teresa and Betty.
