Lawrence-Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Rumsey Funeral Home here for Walter J. Shannon, 82, Lawrence, who died Tuesday, Sept. 18, at a Rochester, Mich., hospital.
Mr. Shannon retired in 1967 as president of DoAll Co., with offices at Detroit, Kansas City, Kan, and Los Angeles. The company manufactured heavy precision machines primarily for the automotive industry.
He was born Jan. 12, 1902, in Brown County, the son of Charles K. and Martha Vernon Shannon. He was graduated from Holton High School. He lived in Royal Oak, Mich., from 1928 until 1948 and at Toluca Lake, Calif., for 10 years as a builder of Precision machines. He lived in Lawrence since 1976.
Mr. Shannon was a member of First Presbyterian Church, KU Alumni Association, Rotary Club, High Twelve Club, Acarcia Lodge No. 9, AF&AM, Scottish Rite Bodies and Shrine Club, all of Lawrence. He also was a member of Abdullah Shrine at Kansas City, Kan., and was a 50-year member of K-club.
Mr. Shannon was a captain of the KU football team in 1920 and the KU track team in 1921. He ran in the Kansas Relays of 1922.
His wife, Mrs. Mary Katherine Smith Shannon, died in 1978.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth L. O'Neill, Lawrence; two sons, Richard L. Shannon, Rochester, Mich., and James L. Shannon in Saudi, Arabia; two sisters, Mrs. Violet Zibell, Holton and Mrs. Patricia Barton Beery, Wichita; a brother, Leo W. Shannon, Redlands, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Masonic graveside services will be conducted by Acacia Lodge No. 9, AF&AM, in Oak Hill Cemetery at Lawrence.
