one of the founders of Canandaigua NY (finger lakes area)who walked with his family from Connecticut, he came originally with his father, Phineas, and brother in law,Orange Brace, found a 5 room cabin to live in much like little house on the prairie. Walked back to Connecticut to retrieve his family and belongings. They ran into some horrible weather where they ran out of provisions and had to eat their oxen and the family dog. This is all documented in the history of Ontario County NY. They all arrived back to what is now Canandaigua to become prominent members of the community where they founded churches, ran businesses and farmed the land. Stephen was a Senator, a poor house overseer as well as a sheriff and Justice of the peace. I am thrilled to live in their home that is now a large rambling Farm house that they built onto the 5 room cabin.
I have a book written by Stephen and Naomi's son James Lawrence Bates aka Judge James he went to Hobart in Geneva NY...Memorial to the Bates Family it is very interesting. anyone interested let me know.
