Phineas Bates was a Justice of the Peace and was elected to the New York
State Senate 1816-1819. He owned and operated a tavern that was in family
hands for years in the area of Canandaigu, New York. He served in the
American Revolution as an ensign and was found serving three days on the
" Lexington Alarm List. " He was a prominent man in the settlement of
Canandaigua, New York. Served in the revolution in the militia.

Came to Canandaigua with his family. Traveled by ox and settled in Canandaigua which is documented in the book titled "History of the pioneer settlement of Phelps and Gorham's Purchase". Was a successful business owner, and justice of the peace. His home still stands on Buffalo St in Canandaigua. Many of his sons were Senators and Sheriffs of the area.
His son Stephen built my home.
