He originally came from Hopewell NY, where he and his family lived, his father Stephen was the sheriff as well as a lawyer and justice of the peace. His family came from Connecticut on foot to a small cabin on the Geneva Turnpike in the Finger lakes area of New York State. his obituary says he died after a short painful illness.
I have a book written by Stephen and Naomi's son James Lawrence Bates aka Judge James who was Philos brother he went to Hobart in Geneva NY...Memorial to the Bates Family it is very interesting. anyone interested let me know.
