Waverly News:
Joseph Downing was born in Seal Township two miles East of the city on August 28, 1800, and died at his residence on 2nd St. April 13, 1888.
He was the son of Meshech Downing, whose death preceded that of his son a few days more than 30 years ago. Joseph was the oldest of 6 children, the others being, Timothy, Martha, William, Isadore and Abisha; Of theses William is living in Champaign County, Illinois and Isadore Blackstone is living near Idaho,this County and State.
Joseph was one of the pioneers of this county,his father moving from Virginia to this county while it was a wilderness. The only sign of civilization being two log cabins, which were in the present corporate limits of Waverly.
He and his father, Meshech, kept tavern on the present site of the Emmitt House, remaining there during the construction of the Ohio Canal.
In 1835 he and his father purchased a tract of land just North of this village, moving there immediately. During this time his father died leaving him in charge of the farm. Here he lived till March of 1866 when he, with his family moved to Waverly, where they have resided since.
In 1844 he was united in marriage to Susan Dougherty. This union was blessed with 7 children; William, Lizzie, Minnie C., David, James, Charles F. and Gertrude. He was a father of 9 children, 7 of whom are living. He has 24 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
