The memorial for Joseph, father of Meshech, has the James Downing line as his parents in the bio. That info conflicts with the history of Pike County. Joseph's father was William Downing & his mother was Letitia Huff. The Line for his wife, Sarah Downing, is Timothy & Sarah Chenoweth, Timothy's parents were James Downing & Susannah Reason who are my 6th great grandparents. James and Susannah had a son named Joseph 1748-1806 in Kentucky.

First settlers and founders of Uniontown, Pike county, Ohio ( now called Waverly)
Excerpts from Pike county history
Meshech Downing came and settled here at a very early day, at least prior to the war of 1812. His house stood nearly where the livery stable back of the Emmitt house now stands, and is known to have been a recruiting point in the war of 1812. This man, his son Joseph, and James Emmitt, then a young man who had begun building a small house here a month before the town was laid out, were the only residents in the near vicinity at the time. The first sale of lots was August 24, 1829.

Mescheh Downing's house had been an inn for travelers for many years. It was situated on the old road from Chillicothe to Portsmouth, which was called Yoakman's trace. The town was laid out to cover land owned by Meshech Downing, Allen Barnes and Richard Chenoweth.( Richard was the son of my 6th ggrandparents Thomas Chenoweth & Mary Prickett)

Mescheh Downing built a new 2 story frame hotel in 1833, on the spot now occupied by the Emmitt house. His son. Joseph Downing opened the house and ran it for several years, after it went into the hands of strangers. The house was burned down in about 1858, in one of two fires which in that year swept out the best part of the town.

In 1815 Mescheh's house was home to the Methodist church (1st church in town). The Downing's. Chenoweths, Howards and Bransons were among the 1st members. In 1834 Meshech was a town trustee.
Mescheh and Joseph Downing were among the founders and builders of Waverly. The Downing family played an important role in starting the beginning of our future. Submitted by their granddaughter, Mary Downing Mahan 2008
