Born in Switzerland. Worked as a manager, "Luna" at the sugar mill at Koloa, Kaua'i.

In October 23, 1872, the Probate Court on the Island of Kaua'i declared that Rosalie Ashelmann, daughter of deceased Christian Ashelmann would be placed in the care of Mr. J. W. Smith.
