A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-eight in Lancaster March 2, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 5 as a private with Co. H, 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company January 31, 1866.
He was twice married:
1. Amanda Schroll married ca. 1864, fathering William Henry (b. 01/03/65), Mary Ellen (b. @1867, d. 12/19/74), Anna Corinda (b. 02/07/69 - married a Will), Lydia May (b. 10/01/70); Emma Jane (b. @1872, d. 12/20/74), and John Irwin (b. 01/14/74). Amanda died January 20, 1874.
2. Mary Shraff or Shoff married November 18, 1875, in Elizabethtown, Lancaster County, fathering Elizabeth Delia (b. 07/09/76), Edgar Milton (b. 10/07/77), Charles Shoff (b. 08/12/79), Luther Malanthem (b. 07/30/82), George Washington (b. 07/14/84), and Mabel C. (b. 08/12/86).
Cause of his death is listed as from "chronic diarrhea contracted in Civil War," i.e., dysentery, although he had somehow managed to survive the condition for more than fifty-five years.
NOTE: Every Ancestry.com family tree his him dying July 6, 1891, which clearly is not true. The possibility of two men named John Fahs seems remote given that the wives, children, and birth date all match.
