Third child of Rev. Samuel Hopkins and first wife Joanna Ingersoll 1725-1793. Grandson of Capt. Timothy Hopkins and Mary Judd. This is a John Hopkins of Cambridge, MA 1634 line.

Levi was first married Dec. 7, 1777 to Miss Abigail Stevens (daughter of Robert), with whom he moved for health reasons to the mountainous region of West Virginia in 1795. After several years, Abigail died and Levi, a farmer, married Elizabeth Yantz, widow of David Looper, Sep. 10,1811.
