Graduated Yale College in 1741. Studied divinity under Jonathan Edwards and was qualified to preach in 1742.

Congregational Church pastor of Great Barrington, MA 1743-1769.
Spent the remainder of his life as a pastor in Newport, RI.
He was an active opponent of slavery.

Son of Capt. Timothy Hopkins and Mary Judd.

Married first wife Joanna Ingersoll on Jan. 13, 1748 in Great Barrington, MA. 8 children:

1. Elizabeth m. Dr. John Sibley, a surgeon in the Revolutionary War. She died Oct. 25, 1790 in Fayetteville, NC, leaving 2 sons. Their descendants have resided chiefly in MO & LA.

2. Joanna m. Mr. Fisher of Medway, MA. She died June 15, 1786, leaving a daughter who resided with her grandfather, Dr. Samuel Hopkins.

3. Rhoda m. Capt. John Anthony of Newport. She died Sep. 22, 1792 at the age of 27, leaving one child.

4. David Hopkins lived near Baltimore, MD, where he died, leaving several children.

5. Moses, a respected magistrate in Great Barrington, MA, had 9 children and died at the age of 84.

6. Levi attended Princeton and lived and died in VA. He left 6 children.

7. Samuel resided on the homestead at Great Barrington, was a successful farmer and left 3 children.

8. Daniel died 1788 in MD at the age of 24.

Married second wife Elizabeth West in Newport, RI on Sep. 14, 1794. No children.
