Sam was born January 30, 1931 on the family farm west of Hammon to Bud and Emily (Smith) Dodson. He passed away on June 1, 2018 at the age of 87 surrounded by the close-knit family he created.
Sam attended Herring School through 8th grade and graduated from Hammon High School. In 1951 he joined the US Air Force. After basic training and technical school, he returned home for 10 days to marry his high school sweetheart, Linda Cope on December 22, 1951. Soon after, he sailed to Korea for one year. Upon his return he was stationed in Austin where they welcomed their first daughter, Denise. In 1954 he was the 45th soldier to checked onto the newly re-opened Air Force base at Altus, OK. Their son Norman was born during their time at Altus. After proudly serving his country for four years, he moved his growing family to his family farm where they welcomed two more daughters Roxann and Vickie. In 1960 he began his career with the US Postal Service first as post master and then as a rural mail carrier. If you were a child on his route he always greeted, you with a piece of bubble gum and a smile. When he retired from the post office in 1986, he was able to enjoy his true passions – farming and raising horses. Sam was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hammon.
He is preceded in death by his mother, father, brothers, Buster, Frank, Joe, and Norman, and sister, Sarah Fay Kirk.
Cherishing his memory, Linda Dodson of the home, daughter Denise Surface of Foss, son Norman Dodson and wife Lenita of Clearwater, Kansas, daughter Roxann Dewees and husband Roy of Cordell, and Vickie Dodson of Foss. They also have eight grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren, one sister, Ruby Bogges of Moore and many nieces and nephews and friends.
