Alberta Viola Gruber was born April 8, 1918 in Litchfield, Illinois; one of twelve children born to Jacob Gruber and Frances Yolanda (Nance) Gruber. Alberta, or "Peaches" as she was often called attended school in Coffeyville, Kansas. She recalled a boy sticking her pigtails in the ink well on his desk. So when she got home that evening her mother cut off the ends of her pigtails. She still remembered the move from Litchfield, Illiinois to Coffeyville, Kansas.

She related that they had to walk part of the way and slept on church porches when necessary. She ate her first persimmon on that trip. On September 12, 1953 Alberta married William Johnson, a truck driver for a produce company. They shared 33 years together and were blessed with two children, three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

The family moved from Coffeyville to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma when her husband was transferred there. Alberta worked for a bakery, a bowling alley and various nursing homes in the area. She received the "Live United Spirit Award" from the United Way for her volunteer work, as well as other recognitions.

She loved to go fishing and said could and did sit in the boat for hours without moving her line because it was so peaceful. She left us with this advice: " Get Up and Keep Moving"!

Alberta Viola (Gruber) Johnson was inducted into the Oklahoma Centenarian Hall of Fame on the occasion of her 100th Birthday.
