Charles Spiering, son of Karl and Tena Knurr Spiering, was born December 10, 1856, in Neunkirchen, Germany. He came to America in 1877 and lived first in Peshtigo, Wisconsin, where he was married in 1883 to Betsy De Land, who survives him. She is 81 years of age and has not been in the best of health for some time. She was a survivor of the great Peshtigo forest fire years ago, in which so many lives were lsot and so much property destroyed. Her recollection of the terrible experience has been a vivid memory to her throughout the years.
Mr. and Mrs. Spiering and their family moved to Squaw Creek in 1914 and engaged in farming until moving to this city in 1920. They lived on the former Slosser farm.
Three daughters and eight sons are living. They are: Herman, of Brillion, Wis.; Albert, of Three Lakes; John, of Shawano; Charles Jr., Fred and Edward, of Manitowoc; Minnie, Mrs. Herbert Betz, of Dallas; Mary, Mrs. Sebert Olson, Gustave, Elsie, Mrs. Wilbur Laib, and William, all of Black River Falls. William lived with his parents. There are 35 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren surviving.
Mr. Spiering was a member of the German Lutheran church at Peshtigo. He was a very hard working and ambitious man, an early pioneer who improved his own homestead and who later engaged in farming. He was a quiet, even tempered man, with a sunny disposition and a pleasant smile for all. He was held in fond regard by the members of his family and friends and will be sadly missed by them. The sympathy of friends is extended to his wife and children.
