Son of Mr. Magus and Sophia Voltmer. Fred was born in Germany in 1838. Sophia's parents had Sophia's marriage to Mr. Magus. When Fred was five years old Sophia married Frederick "Fritz" Humpka. In 1845 the Humpka family of four emigrated from Germany to America (Fred, his mother, stepfather, and half-sister, Dora, age 3). His mother, Sophia, third married Charles Backhaus (Bakehouse).

Husband to Catherine "Kate" Klett, widow of John Henry Gruber. They were married August 13, 1866 In Keokuk County, Iowa. Catherine and Frederick are the parents of three daughters, Sophia, Mary, and Henrietta.
