Essie Pauline Britton Pair was born in Simms, Texas on January 16, 1921 to Boyd Franklin Britton and Iva May "Ivy" Conger. She had four siblings: Allen Leo Britton, Edna Lorene Britton (McClish), Dorothy Ola Britton (Akins), and James Leon Britton. She had one half brother from her mother, Charles Clifford Britton, whose father is not known. She also had many half siblings from her father's subsequent marriages, as well as from her mother's second marriage to Earl Smith Glasscock: Leonard Lee Glasscock, Ivan Garland Glasscock, and Claude Richard "Rick" Glasscock.

At age 16, Pauline had a baby out of wedlock with her 19 year old step brother, Clarence Gee Glasscock. Since they were young and unmarried, their son Franklin Dee "Frank" Glasscock was raised by Pauline's mother (Iva May "Ivy" Conger) and Clarence's father (Earl Smith Glasscock), who were married to each other and had other children together. All available records will show Earl and Iva as his parents, though they are technically his adopted parents.

Pauline died shortly after giving birth to twins Jessie Ray and Bessie May Pair (with husband Buddy Pair, though they were separated at the time); after her death, Buddy gave the twins up for adoption. They went to live with a doctor and his wife from Lubbock and were never seen or heard from again. Pauline was buried alongside her family at Llano Cemetery in Amarillo on June 8, 1939.
