Maxine Hoggan Williams

Early Life: Maxine was born November 30, 1928, the fifth daughter of Ivin Hoggan and Elizabeth Ann Ririe Hoggan, in Ririe, Idaho, a small town named after her grandfather. In 1930, the family moved to Burley, Idaho, where Maxine grew up and attended school, graduating from Burley High School in 1946.
Life’s Work | Service | Interests: In September 1949, Maxine married Tess Mern Williams, the local sportscaster, in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They met while she was working in the Burley High School office. Two children were born of this union: Dorice and Alan Mern. They settled first in Burley, soon after in Ames, Iowa, where her husband attended graduate school, then in Tacoma, Washington; Portland, Oregon; and Orem, Utah. Eventually, they moved to Bountiful, Utah, where they lived for many years. Upon retirement, they bought a condo back in Orem, near Brigham Young University where both she and her husband worked and where she was able to host dozens of nieces and nephews attending college there.
Maxine was a dedicated wife and mother who poured her life into her family, as well as working devotedly for the LDS Church in many capacities at both ward and stake levels throughout her adult life. She was also adored by her numerous nieces and nephews for her interest in their lives, her support in their hard times, her sense of humor, and her renowned home cooking. Maxine attended Idaho State University for one semester, but was called home to take care of her younger siblings when her father was hospitalized in Salt Lake City and her mother went to be with him until he died of cancer. Later in her life, in her thirties, she went back to college at BYU, where she belonged to Phi Kappa Phi. She had nearly finished her degree there, when she was prevented from taking her last few classes by serious health problems. She and her family then moved to East Landing, Michigan, for a year. Upon their return to Utah Valley, she worked as graduate secretary in the department of Child Development and Family Relations, where the graduate students loved her, just as her children, nieces and nephews did. Throughout her life, she worked at several different jobs, ranging from being one of the last local telephone operators in the U.S., to doing the bookkeeping and accounting for NPS (National Product Sales) in Salt Lake City. Maxine and her husband served two LDS missions, one at Temple Square and another at the Church Office Building in the Audio-Visual Department. They also served as temple workers in the then new Bountiful Utah LDS Temple. Beginning to fail in health following her husband’s death, Maxine moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, to be near her children. She lived in Lincoln from 2009 to her passing in 2017. She passed away at Southlake Village Rehabilitation and Care Center, where she was again a favorite with the nurses and aides for taking an interest in them and their lives, teasing them and sharing her sense of humor, even as her body began to give out and she was in great pain. The day after her 89th birthday, Maxine Hoggan Williams passed away peacefully December 1, 2017, in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Survived By: Her daughter, Dorice Williams Elliott (Robert), of Lawrence, KS; her son, Alan Mern Williams (Racquel), of Lincoln; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother.
