Burwell was born in Pauldin Co, GA to Josiah and Louisa Cooper Camp. He served in Company D, 22nd GA Infantry in CSA during the Civil War. He married Louisa Jane Ross 21 February 1877 in Anderson County. His Anderson County death certificate states that his father was George Camp and his mother was a Ross, and that he was buried in Chambers Cemetery, but his marker is in Camp Cemetery.

Per E-mail from his great-granddaughter, Diana Malley, 4 July 2010: Burwell's daughter, Sarah Ida Camp Walston, was born 27 Mar 1880 and died 28 Mar 1965 Houston, Texas. She is buried in Brookside Cemetery in Houston, Memorial #20686929. She was the wife of Benjamin B. Walston.
