Walter Burton Humphrey was born in Johnson Co., Iowa November 2, 1905, the son of Oliver Burton and Kathryn Loretta (McCabe) Humphrey. The family soon relocated to St. Lawrence, Hand Co., South Dakota.

Walter attended country grade school and graduated in 1923 from St. Lawrence High School. He then attended the University of SD where he earned a BS degree in Civil Engineering. He was also a member of the SD National Guard, receiving his 2nd Lt. commission in December of 1926.

He and his SLHS school mate ('26) Margaret (Ellis), daughter of Melvin E. and Ceba M. (Bailey) Ellis, also of St. Lawrence, were married in Hughes Co., SD January 3, 1928. They were the parents of five sons; George, Craig, Richard, James, and Thomas. They lived in in Illinois and New Mexico, and traveled after retirement.
