The son of John S. & Catherine (McClain) Small, in 1860 he married Agnes Hare February 4, 1858, in Conewago Township, Adams County, and fathered Simeon (b. 11/??/58), Mary (b. @1861), Thomas Joseph (b. @1862), Emma G. (b. @1864), Francis Xavier "Frank" (b. 07/23/65), Margaret "Maggie" (b. @1868), and Ambrose P. (b. 12/??/70). In 1860, he was a laborer living in Conewago Township and stood 5' 10" tall with dark hair and gray eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 6 as a private with Co. H, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, at Gettysburg.
In 1870, he lived with his family in Mount Pleasant Township, Adams County, and in 1880-90, in Liberty Township, Adams County. He died at age 68-1-3.
