The son of James Jacob & Sarah (Sauerbier) Small, he married Annie M. Heidler at Conewago Chapel in McSherrystown, Adams County, Pennsylvania, September 27, 1859, and fathered Catharine (b. @1860), Ambrose Augustus (b. 04/10/62), Maggie (b. @1866), Gregory Charles (b. 04/16/67), John (b. @1872), Francis Alphonsus (b. 02/15/78), and Clara (b. 03/26/79 - married Noah Geiman). In 1860 he was a carpenter presumably living in Conewago Township, Adams County, although that portion of the 1860 census has long been missing. He stood 5' 9" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in New Oxford, Adams County, August 29, 1864, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 3 as a private with Co. C, 202nd Pennsylvania Infantry. He reported to sick call for "quincy" [peritonsillar abscess, a complication of tonsillitis], but returned to duty. No sooner had he done that than he suffered a severe contusion of the testicles while cutting timber when a branch snapped up and struck him in the groin. He remained with the regiment and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.
