Jasper J. Howe, 83, a longtime resident of East Dover Road, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington following a period of declining health. He was born Dec. 10, 1917, in West Dover, the son of Ernest and Rose (Scranton) Howe. He attended the old one-room schoolhouse on Coldbrook Road in Wilmington. He was married to the former Dorothy Wright on Aug. 28, 1941, in East Dover. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at the end of this month. Throughout his life, Mr. Howe had always been into farming. He had also worked in the woods, logging with Harold Wheeler and Joe Moore. He worked for a time at the former Vermont Barnboard in Wilmington and at Mount Snow ski resort. Always a hard-working man, he was happiest when there was work to be done, whether it was on the farm or around his house. He leaves his wife of Wilmington; a son, Leonard Howe of Wilmington; a daughter, Nancy Aldrich of Wilmington; a brother, Morton Howe of Cambridge, N.Y.; four sisters, Zella Morgan of Brattleboro, Vivian Glover of Brattleboro, Lillian Classon of Bernardston, Mass., and Doris Adams of Wilmington; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a son, Gerald Howe, on Feb. 27, 1992; a daughter, Barbara Gouin, on Oct. 7, 1995; two brothers, Francis Howe and Harold Howe; and a sister, Agnes Atherton. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Covey & Allen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Marcia Dorey, pastor of the Wilmington Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Howe family lot in Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call at the Covey & Allen Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8.
