Marion Barkley was the son of Joseph Barkley and Barbara Denton. He was born in Cedar, Missouri and married his wife Sarah Ellen Hopkins there on 15 December 1874. He lived in Madison Township, Polk County Missouri until moving to Denison, Grayson County, Texas between the 1910 and 1920 census.
Marion's mother Barbara Denton was the daughter of Elizabeth Lincoln and Isom Denton. Elizabeth Lincoln was President Lincoln's first cousin.
