James was born in Omaha, Nebraska to Alfred A. and Viola (Haitt) Gillespie. He most recently lived in Tempe, Ariz., and Happy Jack, Ariz.
He was a Teamster truck driver for Palo Verde and Roosevelt Dam. He was a member of Teamsters Local No. 395. In Omaha, he worked for the Red Ball Transfer Company.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Mae, of Tempe, Ariz.; two sons, Robert Gillespie of Underwood, Iowa, and James Gillespie of Scottsbluff, Neb.; three daughters, Patricia Vashon and Sherry Gunn, both of Mesa, Ariz., and Nancy Richardson of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Mark Emmons of West Bloomfield, Mich.; a step-son, Ronnie Gillespie of Mesa, Ariz.; a step-daughter, Becky Nielsen of Tempe, Ariz.; two brothers, Donald Pinneo of Omaha, Nebraska and Steven Pinneo of Blair, Nebraska; two sisters, Shirley Christensen of Indianapolis, Ind.; and Lois Crane of Nora Springs, Iowa; 20 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gary.
Services were Saturday at Green Acres Chapel of Light in Scottsdale, Ariz. Memorials may be directed to Rim County Rescue in Happy Jack, Ariz.
