Darrell Edward Johnson, age 68, of Piney Flats, TN, formerly of Richlands, VA, finished his journey to his new home in Heaven on Friday, July 21, 2017 at Vanderbilt Hospital surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with heart disease.

Darrell grew up and lived in Richlands area most of his life. He graduated from Richlands High School Class of 1968. He attended Southwest Virginia Community College and was a licensed welder and electrician. He began his working career at the age of seven selling Grit Papers door to door. He had several other jobs before starting work for Jewell Coal & Coke where he retired after 33 years. He was a man of many skills, no job was impossible to him. He took pride in being a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran having served from 1969 to 1970.

Darrell was a faithful servant of God. He was a member of Cedar Bluff Community Church where he served as a teacher of Wednesday night Bible study, an assistant Sunday School Superintendent, and a deacon. He loved this church and his church family.

Next to God, Darrell’s greatest love was his family. He had such pride in his son Michael, and his daughter, Kimberly. Darrell’s greatest joys were serving God, spending time with family and traveling. He was married for 45 wonderful years to the love of his life, Kay.

Darrell was preceded in death by his mother, Margie Richardson Mullins; brother, Buford Johnson; sister, Mae Vance; and infant daughter, Kristie Melinda Johnson.

Grandsons: Gavin Michael Johnson and Connor Allen Johnson

Sister: Gladys Johnson of Richlands. VA
Brother: Dan Johnson of Homer, Alaska

Special Remembrance to the nurses and caregivers of Vanderbilt North Tower 7 and members of the VAD team of Vanderbilt.

Funeral services for Darrell Johnson will be conducted Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at 2pm at the Cedar Bluff Community Church in Claypool Hill, VA with the Rev. Richard Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, VA. Pallbearers will be: Danny Godbey, Darrell Meade, David Sturgill, Larry McGinnis, Shannon Smith, and Don Vass. Members of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 will conduct military graveside rites.
