Ira Baldwin was the son of Joseph and Dorcas (King) Baldwin. He married Susan Vivian Cantonwine October 18, 1860 in Vinton, Benton county, IA. Susan was the daughter of Michael and Catherine (Myers/Myres) Cantonwine and the granddaughter of Charles and Mary Magdalena (Scholl) Cantonwine.
Charles, the patriarch of the Cantonwine family, immigrated to America from Prussia in 1806, arriving in Philadelphia, Penn., aboard the ship Orlando. The ship's passenger list shows "Chr. Kuntentwine, single man." The name Kuntentwine later evolved to Cantonwine, and Charles appears to be the only surnamed Kuntentwine/Cantonwine to immigrate to America. Eight or so years after his arrival in Philadelphia, in about 1814, Charles married Mary Magdalena Scholl, daughter of Charles Jacob & Margaret (Fuhr) Scholl, in Bedford county, Pennsylvania.

Ira Baldwin, who has been a resident in Vining, this county, for many years, died at two o'clock in the afternoon of Monday, March 8, after an illness of about three weeks, death occurring at the home in Vining. The deceased was born in Meadville, PA, April 24, 1839. In the year of 1860 he went into the state of Iowa, and there on October 18th of that year was united in marriage to Miss Susan Cantonwine, who survives him. To Mr. & Mrs. Baldwin were born twelve chidren, those surviving being the following nine; Mrs. Minnie Fullerton of Clyde, Kan; D.D. Baldwin of Edmond, OK; Mrs. Ida McInturff and Mrs. Myrtle Peters of California; Mrs. Mattie Walquist of Kansas City; and Mrs. Clara Haynes, Mrs. Luella Haynes, Mrs. Eva Haynes and William Baldwin all of Vining, Kan. The children were all present at his bedside at the time of his death, except Mrs. McInturff, who resides in Los Angeles, Cal. Besides the wife and children, Mr. Baldwin is also survived by twenty grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one brother, Chancy Baldwin, who resides in Shellsburg, IA. Mr. Baldwin came to Kansas in the year of 1870 and since that time, continued to reside in the vicinity of Clifton and Vining. His long residence in that neighbor-hood won for him a wide acquaintance and host of friends. He was a member of the Christian church at Vining, and was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge, No. 181, of Clifton, for thirty-five years. Interment was made in the Vining cemetery, under the auspices of the I.O.O.F. Lodge.
