John M. Helm was born in c.1830 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania to Jacob and Elizabeth W. Slick Helm. They then removed to Indiana, settling in Perry Township, Delaware County. He married Mary J. Neely (c 1831 Ohio), daughter of James Margaret Neely on 17 Dec 1848 In Delaware County, Indiana. They raised seven children, he served in the Union Army in the Civil War and in 1880, moved to Manatee County, Florida, a frontier area. Sometime after 1885, Mary his wife died in Manatee. On 17 Nov 1887, in Manatee, he married second, in 1887, Mary Jane Ange (c.1853 Manatee, FL-After 1930), daughter of Oden and Aretta Gwaltney Ange. There is a plaque where they are buried at Pine Level Camping Ground to explain that it was previosly their farm. Ruth Brown Egan
