"Peter A Helm was born in Perry Township, Delaware County, Indiana. His parents were Jacob and Elizabeth (Slick ) Helm, both born in Pennsylvania,lived in Bedford County. She of German and English, and he German and Scotch-Irish descent. At the age of 23, he enlisted for the Civil War for three years participating in some of the most historic battles of that war: Pittsburg Landing, Perryville, and Stone River. After his Honorable Discharge, he returned home and he rented the old home farm of his father, and finally purchasing the homestead which is located in section 2, Perry Township. He married Elizabeth Ann Clevenger on 1 Dec 1864 in Perry Township ,Delaware County, Indiana. Mr. Helm has served as Township Trustee, Assessor, and Appraiser, and twice elected a Commissioner of Delaware County. He is a member of Grand Army of the Republic, and fraternally a member of the Order of Odd Fellows, the Rebekahs, and the Red Men. He is a member of the New Light Christian Church.
