The widowed wife of former Elkton Mayor, Welty Hinkle Hensley, Alice was born on February 26, 1925 in Elkton, Virginia. After graduating from Elkton High School in 1942, she worked as a secretary at Forbets Furniture Company in McGaheysville, Virginia. During the 1940's she worked in the Social Security Clerical office in Baltimore, Maryland, as well as at Merck as a cashier in the cafeteria. She also worked as a teacher’s aide for Rockingham County Schools in the 1970s before becoming a full-time homemaker.
A woman of incredible faith, Alice was a prominent and active member of the Elkton United Methodist Church. With the United Methodist Women, she worked hard with bake sales, fundraisers, and within local church circle groups to make Elkton United Methodist Church a strong, vibrant church. She was a beautiful treasure who touched the lives of many in the community and will be greatly missed.
Alice is survived by her beloved son and daughter-in-law, Winston Kern Hensley and Carol Stoll Hensley, treasured granddaughters, Amy Hensley Allen (Charles) of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and Joy Hensley George (Stuart) of Buena Vista, Virginia; as well as five cherished great-grandchildren, John, Caroline, and Levi Allen, and Alexander and Sebastian George; sister, Edna Rion Sigafoose; sister-in-law, Ruth Rion; nieces, Vicki Sigafoose Breeden and Peggy Eye Lam; and nephews, John E. Rion, Jr. and Jan Rion.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Emmett Floyd and Fannie Mae Heiston Rion; brothers, James Floyd Rion and John Edward Rion; sister, Helen Rion Eye; and nephews, Ernest Rion and Ted Rion.
Visitation will be held at Kyger Funeral Home, Elkton, Va., on Saturday, June 17, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at Elkton United Methodist Church, Warren Ave., Elkton, Va., on Sunday, June 18, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. David T. Reynolds officiating. Interment following in Elk Run Cemetery.
