Donald W. Duncan, 80, of Ammon, Idaho, passed away Saturday, March 17, 2012, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
Don was born January 24, 1932, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Chester Harold Duncan and Elise Winterbottom Duncan. He attended grade schools in Salt Lake City. In 1945 his family moved to Arimo, Idaho, where they farmed for two seasons, which took him out of school. In 1947, at the age of 15, they moved to St. Anthony, where he joined the National Guard and served from 1947 to 1950. In 1948, the family moved to Idaho Falls and he attended Idaho Falls High School.
His earliest jobs included Sco Croft and Challenge Creamery. In 1962 he began working at the INL site for EG&G and retired in 1995.
In 1953, Don met and married the love of his life and forever sweetheart, Geraldine White. They married May 21, 1954. They had a son and two daughters. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple on September 12, 1998.
Don was an avid golfer and skier. He was a member of the National Ski Patrol at Kelly Canyon, and was the leader of the patrol in the early 70's. This afforded Don, Geri, and the kids a lot of wonderful times skiing together. He loved spending time working on his yard, vehicles and anything that required using his hands. After retirement Don loved snow-birding in Apache Junction with his sweet wife, brother Gary, and sister Betty. He especially enjoyed vacationing with his children and grandchildren and traveled all around the Intermountain northwest. Trips included going to Melrose, Disney Land, Canada, the Black Hills and a memorable experience of camping in the parking lot of Circus-Circus in Las Vegas. Weekends spent building, playing, and snowmobiling at the family cabin in Island Park, Idaho, were particularly special family memories. During these trips to the cabin the family would spend time exploring West Yellowstone and Yellowstone National Park. Every summer since 1947, the family would travel to Bear Lake for his family reunion, which he loved and cherished. Don's heart and home was always opened to those he saw in need. He loved his family very much and expressed his love to them each time he saw them with great big hugs and lots of kisses. You could often hear Don humming tunes, which his family will miss dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Elise, his five brothers, Morgan, Doug and Gene Bragg, Jay and Clint Duncan and his son-in-law, Don Hayes.
Survivors include his wife, Geri, of Ammon, ID, son, Don (Lori) Duncan of Ammon, daughters, Janet (Bill) Chase of Ammon, and Kristine Marie Hayes, of Grant, ID; brother, Joseph Gary Duncan of Idaho Falls, and sister, Betty Rae Allen of Pocatello. He had 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, whom he adored.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 23, 2012, at the Ammon LDS 6th Ward, 2055 South Ammon Road. The family will visit with friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 South Ammon Road, and from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. Friday at the church.
