William was the eldest son of Samuel HANNA & Mary CRAWFORD Hanna.

According to the History of Santa Clara County, California, William moved to Warren Co., IL at the age of 22, where he engaged extensively in farming & stock raising. Owing to failing health, he sold his possessions in Illinois and in December of 1859 sailed with his family by way of Panama to California, arriving in San Francisco on January 9, 1860. He came directly to Gilroy upon his arrival.

After arriving in Gilroy, William engaged in the lumber business and went on to serve the city as both a Councilman and Mayor, eventually being elected to the state legislature in 1877.

He was the inventor and patentee of two improvements in mechanisms relating to steam propelling power.

William was married December 14, 1848, to Rebekah CRESSWELL, daughter of General Samuel CRESSWELL. They had 9 children together, five boys and four girls:
