Shubal YORK was the fifth child of ten children born to Semore YORK I and his wife Sylvania L ALDRIDGE. Shubal was named after the famous pioneer pastor Rev Shubal STEARNS of the Sandy Creek Baptist Church, Randolph County. Semore YORK donated 2 acres of land from his land grant to Rev Shubal STEARNS in 1756 to establish the historic Sandy Creek Baptist Church from which came two major Christian Denominations; viz., The Southern Baptist and the Primitive Baptist.

Shubal YORK first married his maternal first cousin Bethenia ALDRIDGE, age 25, in about 1786 in Randolph County, North Carolina. The five known children of Shubal YORK and his first wife Bethenia ALDRIDGE are:

1. William James YORK, Sr., b. 1790 NC; d. 1860, IN
2. Jones YORK, b. 1793 NC; d. 1794, NC
3. Elizabeth "Betsy" YORK, b. 1795, NC; d. 1823, IN
4. Shubal YORK, Jr., b. 1797, NC; d. 1855, IN
5. Mary "Polly" YORK, b. 1798; d. 1877, IN

It is believed that Bethenia ALDRIDGE, age 39, died at the child birth of her fifth child. She is most likely buried beside her parents in the 5th row of the McMasters Cemetery, Randolph County, North Carolina.

The widower Shubal YORK having five very young children married a second time in 1799 to Molly WRIGHT, age 17, in Randolph County, North Carolina. It is believed that Shubal and Molly had four children:

1. Alvin YORK, b. 1800, NC; d. ?
2. George YORK, b. 1801, NC; d. ?
3. Gillam YORK, b. 1802, NC; d. ?
4. Lemuel YORK, b. 1804, NC, d. ?

It is believed Molly WRIGHT perhaps died at child birth in 1804.

Widower Shubal YORK married a third time on 26 Nov 1805 to Mary GRIMES, age 26, in Randolph County, North Carolina. Shubal and Mary are believed to have four children:

1. Isaac YORK, b. 1806, NC; d. aft 1880, NC
2. Hester or Ester YORK ALDRIDGE, b. 1808 NC; d. 1845 IN
3. Nancy YORK, b. 1813, NC; d. ?
4. Patsy YORK, b. 1815, NC; d. ?

In 1815/1816 the wagon trains left Randolph County, North Carolina with a number of YORK and ALDRIDGE (ALLDREDGE) families for the new state of Indiana. These families with young children headed north on the Great Wagon Road up through the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Then they most likely turned north west on the Braddock Road through Frederick County, Virginia seeking the banks of the Ohio River. There they no doubt took river boat trips negotiating the Ohio River to what today is Mt Vernon, Black Township, Posey County, Indiana to settle and pioneer their new land and build log cabins. The Northwest Territory was organized in 1800 and Indiana became the new 19th state of the USA. This new land attracted new settlements first along the fertile low lands near the Ohio River in Posey County.

Suggested edit: Shubal York's first wife and the mother of most of his children was almost certainly a Jones, Dennis, a daughter of Aquila and Elizabeth Jones. I had no idea of this earlier, but I have found a pattern of DNA matches among my Jones-descended relatives's testing kits which suggest it. Not to mention that there was an older son named Jones York and that Barnabas York or Barnaby York, Shubal's son, also had a son named Jones York and one named Aquila York. Just something for you to consider.
