Betty Irene Buchanan
Saturday, September 4, 1926 - Monday, April 10, 2017

Betty Irene (Snyder) Buchanan, 90 of both Swanton and Cumberland died, Monday, April 10, 2017. Betty was known for her quiet ways, her love of a party, and her graciousness.

Born September 4, 1926, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Madalyn and Leroy Snyder. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul and her daughter, Paula.

She was a member of St Luke’s Lutheran Church.

She was scheduled to go for an interview with the secretarial pool at the FBI in Washington, DC when her father, Leroy Snyder, died suddenly in Betty’s senior year of high school. Out of bad came some good, as she had to stay at home to help run her father’s store, the Dairy Dip. As luck would have it, a young, handsome, just home from the war soldier, Paul Buchanan called her for a date. Needless to say, she ended up staying in Cumberland, marrying Paul ,and having four devoted young daughters (3 of them in eleven months – yep, 1 + twins)!

A devoted homemaker, Betty loved arts and crafts and enjoyed working with the Century Club on the Christmas Showcase of Houses. She also loved sewing and would stay up all night working on Halloween Costumes, prom dresses, and school clothes. She was a master at making soup. Later, when the kids hit the college years, Betty, with the encouragement of Paul, went to work in real estate at Workmeister Agency and later with Goodfellow Agency. She bought, sold, and listed with zeal, racing around in her white Cadillac with red leather seats. If you took a ride with Betty, you knew that at her speed, the next curve would have you flying over those leather seats to the other side of the car!

Paul had an entrepreneural side which he didn’t always discuss with Betty. One day he asked her out to lunch at Barton’s restaurant. While sitting at lunch, Paul asked Betty to go look at a boat in the parking lot. Betty, being wise to Paul said, “I know you and you probably already bought that boat,” Yes, Betty knew Paul and little did she know that he had bought some property to develop at Deep Creek Lake too!

So began the “happy years” of camping in a tent with 4 kids, portable potties, clearing land, and a dream they both eventually shared. They ultimately built their home, added on, and lived many happy years there…
Along with the new tractor for her birthday or the new tool that was essential to lake living (Paul’s idea).

Betty loved and was loved. Her daughters adored her and are thankful she is at peace and will join Paul in Heaven for everlasting life.

Betty is survived by her daughters Kathy Jovovich and husband Robert, Novato, CA, Karen Buchanan and companion Nicholas Tarrasoff, San Rafael, CA, and Christine Taugher, Fairfax, VA; three grandsons, James Krantz and wife Kelly, Brian Taugher and wife Amanda, and Alex Taugher and fiance’ Stephanie; and, two great grandsons, Avery Krantz and Braden Krantz.

There will be a private graveside service for immediate family at Rose Hill Cemetery on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at 11:30 AM.

Memorial contributions can be made to Garrett County Hospice, P. O. Box 271, Oakland, MD 21550.

Condolences to the family may be posted after Mrs. Buchanan’s obituary at www.upchurchfh.com
