Grantsville, MD - Don Nealen Snyder, 89, of Grantsville, MD, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014, at his home with his wife, son, and daughter at his side.
Born February 19, 1925, in Cumberland, MD, Mr. Snyder was the son of the late John LeRoy Snyder and Madoline (Wiebel) Snyder.
He was also preceded in death by his brother: Myles K. Snyder; and a very special uncle: John C. Metzger. A graduate of Allegany High School, Class of 1943.
Don was a United States Army Veteran having served during World War II in the 127th AAA Gun Battalion.
He was active in sports activities and earned the nickname "Golden Toe" when he served as the field goal kicker for the football team. He won the Babst Trophy in 1943, and was elected into the Allegany Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. Don enjoyed the outdoors, golfing, and hunting.
Don is survived by his wife of 33 years: Linda (Maust) Snyder; his children: David Snyder and wife, Kathy, LaVale, MD; Carol Gimler and husband, John, Andover, NJ; Brian Snyder and wife, Ometa, Stephens City, VA; and, Alan Snyder and wife, Cindy, Cumberland, MD. He also leaves behind his stepsons: Charles Palmer and wife, Shirley, Cumberland, MD; and Bryan Palmer and wife, Tanya, Grantsville, MD; his sister: Betty Snyder,-Buchanan, Cumberland, MD; as well as 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, on Monday, April 14, 2014, from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M.
A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday, April 14, 2014, at 11:00 A.M., Deacon David A. Conley officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Ryan Snyder, Justin Snyder, Charles Palmer, Michael Snyder, Ray Loughrie, and John Gimler. Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Post #13 Veterans Honor Guard.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made t o the Hospice of Garrett County, Post Office Box #271, Oakland, MD 21550; or, the Wounded Warrior Project, Post Office Box #758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
