She was born on Feb. 3, 1923, in Tingley, Iowa. At the age of 6 weeks, she moved with her family to Wheatland, Wyo., where she was raised. After finishing her schooling she served in the Navy during World War II. Upon discharge, her high school sweetheart, Deforest Rhinehart met her in Arlington, Va., where they were married. They returned to Wheatland for a short time, then purchased a ranch in Eastern Montana where they raised their five children. In 1966 the family moved to California where Betty retired from the State of California.
After retirement, Betty returned to Montana and resided in Billings where she enjoyed visiting family, traveling, working crossword puzzles, playing with her grandchildren and reading. She loved playing cards with family and friends and was a true puzzle master.
She is survived by her two daughters, Colleen Tanner (Warren) and Patsy Card (Richard) of Billings and three sons, Robert (Gloria) of Turlock, Calif., Harry of Billings and Clark (Janice) of Big Horn; 19 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Floy Ashenhurst, and her five siblings.
She was a devoted loving mother and a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Graveside services will be in Custer, at 1 p.m. Oct. 20.
